The Hardap Dam and Hardap Recreation Resort lie 250 km south of Windhoek. At 30 km long the dam is Namibia’s largest man made lake and has much to offer in the way of recreation. Surrounding the dam is a small game reserve, which is divided into two sections. A circular day walk in the north-western section offers keen nature lovers a closer look at the environment, whereas the largest concentrations of game can be found in the southern section. Fishing is excellent and the dam is a popular venue for freshwater angling competitions. In stark contrast to the surrounding arid countryside the dam is a magnet for a variety of birds which come to nest on the islands. The most striking feature of the Hardap Recreation Resort is the circular glass fronted restaurant, which affords diners a 180-degree view over the dam. Accommodation is in bungalows the majority of which have a view. Additional facilities include a swimming pool, caravan and camping sites, a shop, kiosk and filling station.
