THE EASTERN HIGHLANDS & NYANGA NATIONAL PARK

There are streams, waterfalls, lakes, forests, hiking trails, golf courses and many other mountain activities to be enjoyed in this region. The crisp mountain air and the lush scenery make this a favourite tourist destination. The region includes Nyanga National Park with its spectacular World’s View; 30 hectares of indigenous and exotic plants which make up the Vumba Botanical Gardens; and the rugged Chimanimani Mountains reaching over 2,400m and a real challenge to climbers.

The park offers a great variety of scenery from the county's highest mountain, Mount Nyanga, to the deep valleys and gorges. Tropical forests cover the hills of Chiranda. The steep cliffs are the home of the eagle and the leopard.

The ancient ruins which cover the countryside are very well preserved. Among the best known are the Ziwa Ruins, discovered in 1905 and covering an area of 80 square km. The Nyanga Aloe and the dwarf Msasa forests are unique to the area. Scenic drives, leading to the major attractions, have been built throughout the area.

Nyanga is famous for its trout fishing. Some of the finest trout fishing is at Mare Dam, Rhodes Dam and Udu Dam within the national park. The best months to visit are from April to September. In June/July it is very cold at night.
