OKAVANGO DELTA |
One of Africa's most enchanting places. Every summer, floods pour
down from the highlands of Angola and the Okavango River and flow into a great network of
waterways, lakes and lagoons in the Okavango Delta. The water flows through this huge
flood plain and disappears into the sands of the Kalahari. The landscape is green, thick
papyrus grows everywhere, choking the waterways in many places so that a canoe is the only
practical transport. There are large numbers of crocodiles and hippo. Red lechwe, sitatunga and the Chobe bushbuck have adapted to the wet conditions and live on the reed islands. The Delta is at its maximum during June and July and at its minimum in December and January. Although fishing is good throughout the year, the best months are from August to February. The best game-viewing months are from July to October. The north-western part of the Delta has permanent water. Here we find the 100 km long, narrow channel known as the Panhandle which is the normal course of the Okavango River. The area is rich in fish and bird life. |
