Larger than France, Austria, Switzerland and Hungary combined, Zambia sprawls across 750 000 square kilometres in central Southern Africa. Completely landlocked by Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Zaire and Angola, the country consists mainly of a kidney-shamed plateau about 1 300m above sea level that descends gently in the south towards the Zambezi River. Here the cauldron of white water water known as Mosi-oa-Tunya - 'the Smoke that Thunders' - tumbles over the Victoria Falls as the mighty Zambezi sloughs through the African bush on its way to Lake Kariba. zambia_info.GIF (26098 bytes)

BORDER POSTS

BEST TIME TO GO
Generally the cool, dry season between May and October is the best for paying a visit. Game viewing improves as the bush thins and dries peaking in October. The country is at its most beautiful in the summer when it is green and the vegetation luxuriant.

CLIMATE
Summer: October and November is hot and dry (19°C - 32°C)
Winter: May to September is cool and dry (10°C - 25°C)
Rainy Season: December to April.

There are three seasons: the cool, dry winter season from May to September, the hot, dry season in October and November and the hotter, rainy season between December and April. In the rainy season it is often impossible to travel in many areas of the country especially in national parks where untarred roads become impassable even to four-wheel-drive vehicles. In winter nights are cold. October is known as suicide month in the Zambezi and Luangwa valleys where it is very hot and dry.

INSURANCE
We strongly recommend that you take out travel insurance which includes curtailment and cancellation cover, upon confirming your booking.

If you are coming on safari with Afro Ventures, you will automatically be covered by their Emergency Evacuation Insurance, underwritten by Europe Assistance. This guarantees all reasonable, practical assistance in obtaining primary and/or emergency medical services for an insured person who suffers illness or injury. Please note that this is an evacuation insurance only and does not replace the normal travel insurance which you must purchase.

LANGUAGES
Seventy-three different dialects are spoken in Zambia. English is, however, the official language and is spoken throughout the country. Bemba is the most widely spoken indigenous language. Others are Kaonde, Lozi, Lunda, Luvale, Nyanja and Tonga. Your safari will be conducted in English.

PHOTOGRAPHY
Film is available at most game lodges, but stocks are usually small and of the common sizes only.

For game and bird photography a telephoto lens of between 200 and 300mm is strongly recommended. Larger lenses which require a tripod are generally impractical for game photography from vehicles, as are double lens reflex cameras. A lens hood and ultra violet filter are advisable and a dust cover (plastic bag) is essential. Remember to bring spare batteries for your camera as these are seldom available on safari. Binoculars are invaluable for bird and game viewing.

ROAD CONDITIONS
The majority of Zambia's roads are negotiable by ordinary car but a four-wheel-drive is recommended to cope with the roads which are not well maintained. In the game reserves and western Zambia a fur-wheel-drive vehicle is essential. Traffic drives n the left.
