Battlefields/Phinda Self-drive

Today it is difficult to imagine that the scenic and tranquil landscape of the northern parts of KwaZulu-Natal was once the focal point of major military clashes. The area has great appeal to military history enthusiasts, for it was here that one historical drama after the other unfolded against the canvas of the African veld and the majestic Drakensberg. Phinda Resource Reserve is cradled between the Ubombo Mountains to the west and the Indian Ocean to the east and is in one of Africa’s most diverse regions. Freshwater lakes and river floodplains are the domain of prehistoric crocodile, hippo, pelicans and flamingos, whilst the bush is the domain of the rare and endangered black rhino, as well as Africa’s great predators.

DAY 2: BATTLEFIELDS
The flagship tours to Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift are led by registered tour guides that are superb storytellers, making the history of that day come alive. David Rattray’s family associations with the area and its people will offer you some unique, Zulu perspectives. Learn in gripping detail, of the bravery and mobility of the Zulu army that defeated the British at Isandlwana, on The Day of the Dead Moon. The 17km of river frontage includes the famous site of Fugitives’ Drift, where Lieutenants Melvill and Coghill lost their lives in 1879 trying to save the Queen’s Colour of their regiment, winning the first two posthumous Victoria Crosses in history. Listen at sunset to the famous story of Rorke’s Drift, where 100 British soldiers were attacked by 4000 Zulu warriors, earning them more Victoria Crosses than in any other battle in history.

DAY 3: PHINDA RESOURCE RESERVE
